Smart Sun Protection for Active Women: Beyond Sunscreen

You’re doing everything right—and still wondering if that stubborn dark spot is sun damage in disguise. Sound familiar? You wear sunscreen, avoid the midday sun, and still find yourself checking for new lines in the mirror like they’re breaking news. You’re not imagining it. Sunscreen is important, but it’s only one part of the puzzle. Shade, clothing, and smart habits matter too. Let’s break it all down. Let’s get into it.

First, what’s up with UV rays?

There are two main types—UVA and UVB.

UVA rays go deep into your skin. They cause wrinkles, age spots, and even skin cancer.
UVB rays burn the top layer of your skin and can also lead to skin cancer.

Here’s an easy way to remember:
UVA = Aging. UVB = Burning. Got it? Good!

How to protect yourself:

• Wear sunscreen the right way

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Pick one with SPF 30 or higher and make sure it’s water resistant. Reapply it every 2 hours—especially if you’re sweating or swimming.

Look for zinc oxide on the label. It helps block visible light that can cause dark spots and protects all skin tones.

Women of color need sun protection too. Some mineral sunscreens leave a white cast on darker skin. A tinted mineral sunscreen works better and blends into your skin.

• Cover up with clothing

Clothing is one of the easiest ways to block UV rays. Try long-sleeved shirts, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

Bonus: Wearing the right clothing means you don’t have to reapply sunscreen as often. Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics so you stay cool and protected.

Sunglasses do more than block glare -  they protect your eyes. UVA rays can hurt the retina (the back part of your eye), and UVB rays can make your vision less clear over time. Always choose sunglasses with 100% UV protection.

• Find shade and drink water

Try to stay in the shade between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

And don’t forget to drink water! Take small sips every 10 minutes when you’re outside to stay hydrated and keep your skin healthy.

• Think about long-term skin health

You can also use products with vitamin C or retinol. These help smooth your skin, even out your skin tone, and support aging skin.

It’s normal for your skin to change over time. But the healthy habits you start now will make a big difference all year long.
