The Ultimate Guide to Serums: Morning vs. Night

The ocean is calling your name! It’s time to go. Warm, sun-filled days at the beach with cool, balmy nights. It’s summer vacay time!

The soft, ocean breeze is warm, your beach bag is packed, and for the first time in months, your schedule belongs to you. No meetings. No laundry. No rushing from one place to another. Just time to rest.

Along with your favorite book and sandals, you've packed the skincare essentials you rely on every day—cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, and your favorite serum.

Then you pause.

Wait…should I use my serum in the morning or at night?

Before we answer that question, ask, remind me why I need a serum?

Great question.

Well, after age 40 your skin naturally produces less collagen and oil. Fine lines become more noticeable. Skin can feel drier than it did in your 20s and 30s. That's why serums become such an important part of a skincare routine. Their concentrated ingredients help target concerns like dullness, dryness, uneven skin tone, and wrinkles.

Many women begin noticing these changes after 40. The good news is that the right serum can help your skin look healthier, brighter, and more refreshed.

☀️ Before You Head Out for the Day

You’re heading to breakfast on the beach, sightseeing, walking the boardwalk, or sitting by the pool. Your skin needs protection. Before you get out there, think of your morning serum as your skin's bodyguard. Ingredients like Vitamin C and niacinamide help defend your skin from pollution, free radicals, and daily environmental stress.

Vitamin C supports collagen production and reduces the look of dull skin all while protecting your skin as you move through your day.

Niacinamide strengthens your skin barrier, improves moisture levels, and the texture of your skin.

Let’s just add right here, sunscreen is important. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays, with SPF 30 +, and is water resistant.

After applying serum, follow with moisturizer and sunscreen for even better protection.

Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours if you’re spending time outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.

🌅 When the Sun Goes Down

After a day in the sun, you shower, slip into comfortable clothes, light a candle, and give your skin time to recover while you sleep. Your nighttime serum is your skin's repair team. While you’re sleeping, your skin gets busy repairing itself. That’s where peptides come in. Think of them as tiny helpers that encourage your skin to make more of the proteins that keep it looking firm, smooth, and healthy.

🌙 Let Your Skin Rest While You Do

While you sleep, your skin naturally renews itself. Ingredients like retinol and peptides work alongside this process to soften fine lines, improve texture, and encourage healthier-looking skin.

Your skin is hard at work while you sleep. It repairs daily damage, restores moisture, improves circulation, and calms inflammation. You wake up looking refreshed—not because of magic, but because your skin had time to do what it was designed to do.

If you don’t have a skincare routine, here is a simple one to get started:

In the morning, apply cleanser, then toner (optional), next serum, then moisturizer, and finish with sunscreen.

In the evening, apply cleanser, then toner(optional), next serum, finally moisturizer, and facial oil is optional.

Now settle into your lounge chair, breathe in the salty ocean air, and enjoy every moment of your vacation. You've cared for your skin, protected it from the day's adventures, and given it what it needs to renew overnight.

Tomorrow morning, the ocean will still be waiting.

And so will another opportunity to care for yourself.
