Fitness and Skin Care: How Working Out Helps Your Skin
By Jacqueline White, Health Writer | Certified Health and Wellness Coach
After my morning walk or run I always have a glow on my face that's not there at other times of the day. It's a natural glow.
If you've noticed this after your workout or if you want to have that glow, then listen up. I'm going to share how fitness improves skin health so you can have that post workout glow too.
Regular exercise is important for maintaining whole-body health. A good workout routine can also encourage healthy, beautiful skin.
But how exactly does breaking a sweat lead to that radiant glow? Let’s take a look at the benefits of staying active—and how fitness may be one of the best-kept secrets in your skincare routine.
1. Improved Blood Flow to Nourish Skin
When you exercise, your heart pumps faster to deliver blood to your muscles. That same blood flow also reaches your skin. This increased circulation helps deliver nutrients to skin cells. Over time, this nourishing effect supports skin cell renewal. You’ll notice an even complexion, and a fresh, healthy look after your workout.
2. Detoxing and Cleansing Through Sweat
Sweating not only cools you down, it also helps purge toxins from your skin. While sweat alone isn’t a deep cleanse, it can help flush out dirt and oil from pores. Remember to cleanse your face gently after exercise to remove any buildup and prevent breakouts.
3. Fitness Fights the Signs of Aging
Exercise helps reduce inflammation, support collagen production, and regulate hormones like cortisol. All this can impact the way your skin ages. Regular physical activity improves skin thickness and elasticity. It also helps prevent sagging and fine lines over time. In fact, a 2023 study published in Scientific Reports found that both cardio and strength training improved skin elasticity—and resistance training even increased skin thickness, which may help reduce sagging and fine lines over time.1
4. Protecting Your Skin While You Move
Whether you’re running, walking, or biking outdoors protecting your skin is essential. Use a lightweight, sweat-resistant sunscreen and wear protective clothing or a hat if you’re outside. If you're indoors, keep skin clean and breathable by avoiding heavy makeup during workouts.
5. The Post-Workout Glow Is Real
That flushed, radiant look after exercise isn’t just in your head. It’s the result of boosted circulation, endorphins, and sweat. Over time, regular physical activity can give your skin a natural vibrance that no highlighter can match.
The Bottom Line
Your skin reflects what’s going on inside your body. Regular physical activity is one of the best ways to support both. Exercise helps your skin in many ways. It gets your blood moving, helps your body get rid of toxins, and keeps your skin firm and healthy.
That glow you see after a workout. It’s real! So, the next time you go for a walk or do some stretching, remember—you’re not just helping your body, you’re helping your skin look great too.
